High-Resolution Touch Screen Interface for White Goods Industry

TouchSensor was tasked with designing and manufacturing a high-resolution touch screen interface to withstand the extremes of a wall oven application.

Through a highly collaborative process, our team developed an appliance market first – an extremely responsive user interface featuring 4mm thick tempered glass.

STORY

One of the world's largest white goods OEMs approached TouchSensor™ to design a user interface with consumer electronics-like performance for their premium brand's new wall oven. While a high-resolution touch screen interface is commonplace in the consumer electronics (CE) world today, adapting a similar touch-screen design to the appliance world posed significant challenges. Chief among them was the customer's requirement to maintain high touch resolution while sensing through 4mm tempered glass, instead of the average 1mm thickness for CE applications. Working in conjunction with the customer's technical, marketing and industrial design groups, and partnering with Atmel Corporation's touch screen IC development team, TouchSensor created a first-of-its-kind high-resolution touch screen interface for the appliance market.
