What is a TouchCell™? A TouchCell™ consists of the following:

  • One TS100 IC
  • Electrode structure
  • Two resistors for sensitivity selection

How does TouchSensor’s Field-Effect technology compare to capacitive technology? Unlike conventional touch technologies that employ capacitance to sense touch, TouchSensor uses its cutting edge Field-Effect technology in a digital, software-free IC. Additionally, TouchSensor’s TouchCell™ is recognized by UL as a fail-safe switch (No other touch technology offers this). What this means for TouchSensor‘s customers:

  • No software to develop, manage, and possibly field-upgrade
  • Much stronger signal-to-noise ratio at the point of touch
  • No analog traces to cause “false” touches
  • Plug and play replacement of membrane or mechanical switches
  • Extremely high immunity to electrical noise and contaminants
  • No keypad FMEA needed

Why are TouchCells™ more flexible than traditional capacitive touch keypads?
Each TouchCell™ is an independent, digital switch. As a result, they can be moved
around a keypad area easily without affecting the touch performance of adjacent keys.
In comparison, moving capacitive switch locations around requires new software and
“tuning” of analog traces.

Why are TouchSensor TouchCells™ more reliable/durable than mechanical or membrane switches? TouchCells™ are solid-state devices with no moving parts. With no moving parts to wear out, the wear and tear issues which plague conventional switches are inherently eliminated. Additionally, because TouchCells are mounted behind solid substrates, user and environmental abuse become a non-factor. Furthermore, TouchCells are recognized as fail-safe device by Underwriters Laboratories (UL File # E187820).

How does TouchSensor interface with my electronics?
Interface options include:

  • Matrix (direct membrane replacement)
  • Parallel
  • Serial (I2C, SPI, USB, RS-485…)

How much power is required to run a TouchCell™? 5VDC ± 10%. Current consumption
is 16µamps.

What is a typical TouchCell™ size? The typical TouchCell™ requires an area of 18mm x 18mm. Other pad sizes are available.

How close can I place TouchCells™? TouchCells™ can be placed as close as
1mm (edge-to-edge).

What pitch (center-to-center) can be achieved? Based on human factors, TouchSensor recommends a pitch of 20mm for a typical TouchCell™. Tighter pitches can
be achieved depending on application.

What substrates can be used? TouchCells™ work with almost any dielectric material. The most common substrates are glass and plastic.

How thick can my substrate be? The typical substrate thickness ranges from 2mm to 5mm. Other thicknesses can be evaluated on an application basis.

Can TouchSensor incorporate displays and lighting in my User Interface design? Yes. TouchSensor has some very basic patents pending which cover methods to combine Touch with lighting. Display options that can be added to your UI include:

  • Single point LEDs
  • Touch zone lighting and backlighting of pads
  • 7-segment displays
  • LCD
  • VFD

Can TouchSensor assist me with my User Interface design? Unlike some companies that sell a “touch IC” loaded with software requiring the customer to develop in-house expertise to create a touch interface, TouchSensor’s business model calls for the design and manufacturing of complete UI systems. We employ experts in electronics, materials, lighting/displays, industrial design and mechanical design. As a result, TouchSensor can provide complete turn-key UI designs ready for your end application.

Are TouchCells™ cost competitive with membrane switch prices? Yes. TouchSensor is displacing membrane switches in a variety of markets.

What is the typical turn-around time for a prototype keypad? 2 to 4 weeks.

What is TouchSensor’s field experience? TouchSensor has been producing user interface systems since 1997 and has shipped nearly 15 million units and 200 million TouchCells™ across a variety of applications including:

  • Appliances
  • Vending
  • Fitness
  • Industrial
  • Food Service
  • Marine
  • Automotive
  • RV
